In Dallas, our sprinkler systems always have to be operating at peak efficiency, but summer watering is especially important. For a sprinkler system to work correctly, every individual part needs to be functioning correctly. That includes the piping, valves, and timers. However, the sprinkler heads can be the most crucial piece of the puzzle. Surprisingly they are rather sensitive components. Even the most straightforward sprinkler head problems can lead to your yard receiving too much or too little water, which often means you’re spending money on water you don’t need.
To have a beautiful yard, all the parts of your irrigation system have to work in unison. Luckily for Dallas homeowners, CGreens Landscape Management is here to help! We’ve put together a list of the most common sprinkler head problems that we see in North Texas:
Sprinkler Head Problems
- Blockages/Clogs – Since many sprinkler heads retract into the ground when they are not in use, dirt or other pieces of debris blocking the holes and screens are very common. If you notice your sprinklers are not spraying enough water, this is the first thing you should check.
- Incorrect Spray Pattern – Sprinkler heads are set-up in a way that ensures your entire yard receives that water that it needs. The person who installs the sprinkler heads spaces them out to provide maximum coverage. Sometimes damage or movement of the sprinkler head will disrupt the spray pattern of your sprinkler system. Over time, foot traffic, the lawnmower, and moisture differences will cause the soil surrounding the sprinkler head to shift.
- Broken Sprinkler head – The most common cause of sprinkler head damage is being run over by a car or the lawnmower. The only way to fix this issue is to get a new sprinkler head, ensure the up and down motion is functioning, and be more careful the next time around!
- Misting – Misting is a sign that the water pressure in that head is too high. The best way to fix this is to make sure you have a valve pressure regulator and turn the pressure down.
