Proper Summer Landscape Management in Dallas, TX

Well, Texas, summer is here, so many people are figuring out ways to keep kids entertained and beat the heat. Amid the summer BBQs and trips to the pool, make sure to continue your landscape management by doing these 5 things:

  1. Continue Fertilizing: Remember that fertilizing regimen you began in the spring? You’ll want to continue your applications throughout the summer and every 4-8 weeks, depending on whether you used a regular or slow-release fertilizer. With Texas summer heat and dryness, it will be very important your lawn continues to be fed the nutrients it needs to thrive.
  2. Water: Most people know to water their lawns in the summer, and if you have an irrigation or sprinkler system, this makes it even easier. Make sure to set your watering times to early morning or late evening when the sun is at less risk of causing too much evaporation loss. In many areas in Dallas, TX and the surrounding area, it’s even the law.
  3. Mow: Naturally, when you feed your lawn with fertilizer and water it regularly, it will grow, which leads to the need for mowing–something that will need to be done throughout the summer. Be careful not to cut the lawn too short; mowing high will actually allow the grass to form deeper roots and provides more shade for the undergrowth. In addition, leaving the grass clippings when you mow will help to continue to feed your lawn. You’ll also want to make sure your lawn mower blade is sharpened to be sure of a clean cut and to avoid damage to the grass.
  4. Treat the Weeds: Many people might be tempted to leave the weeds and continue to just mow them down with the rest of their actual grass, but this is a mistake. Even though weeds are also green and can sometimes be mistaken for lawn, weeds are still weeds: By definition they will overtake the desired lawn specie you have in your landscape. Make sure to spot-treat weeds that creep up throughout the summer months to keep your lawn healthy and full.
  5. Treat for Pests: When you think of pest control, you may automatically think of mosquitoes, spiders, beetles, and other pests that people find especially annoying. While these particular bugs are typically harmless to your lawn, there are pests that can wreak havoc on a landscape, seemingly overnight. Pest control helps keep pests out of your house, but is also an important aspect of landscape management. You’ll want to keep your lawn free of pests common to Dallas, TX such as chinch bugs, fire ants, grubs, and caterpillars. The army worm, for instance, a moth caterpillar, can eat through entire patches of lawn in a matter of days. Consistently check your lawn during the summer for these pests and treat it before it’s too late

And if that seems like too much to keep up with, there’s always tip #6: Leave it to the Professionals. CGreens offers award-winning lawncare service all throughout the Mextroplex. Call CGreens, a lawn care company in Dallas, TX. Service and free estimates at 972-231-2870.

erosion control

Erosion Control

CGreens uses a variety of ways to hold soil and keep it from washing away. Installing a retaining wall is an option that would be appropriate. There are many types of materials we use for the wall, from railroad ties, landscape timbers, concrete stones that look reasonably natural to many varieties and colors of native stone, which would be a beautiful addition to a landscape.

Of course, plant material such as ground cover or grass is excellent as an erosion control mechanism if you have the correct amount of sun and water. You may have a temporary need during construction that we can help with by utilizing special cloths explicitly designed for erosion control.

Re-grading your landscape to create a proper slope for runoff water and installing foundation protections such as wall sealant.

Adding a root barrier is also an option to help keep trees and large plant life from drawing moisture away from the soil which leads to erosion near the foundation of your home.

sump pump

Sump Pumps

An Installation of a Sump Pump or Pits would be done by CGreens in situations where there is not enough slope to discharge to a Surface Drain. Also, French Drains are typically deeper and will need a pump to discharge water up and out to an area away from the collection points.

The pumps that we install are commercial grade and can pump debris up to 1 ½” in diameter. We install check valves, unions, and alarms when necessary.

french drains

Surface & French Drains

Installation of surface drains, which are catch basin with a grate over the top of them at ground level, allows surface water to flow into them. When installing this system, CGreens makes sure to use a solid pipe that runs to a lower area to discharge, such as the street or storm drains.

CGreens installs French Drains to collect subsurface water, not surface water! French Drains are a trench in the ground, lined with a GeoTech cloth that allows water but not soil to penetrate. A solid PVC pipe that has holes is placed at 5 & 7 O’Clock positions, then the trench is filled with gravel, and the cloth is folded over at ground level.

Creating this hole creates a barrier to stop water and serve as protection and a sponge to draw water away from an area that needs to be kept dry. When we install a French Drain to prevent water from penetrating under a pier and beam foundation, the drain will be at least 6 inches below the perimeter beam.

Special note* CGreens uses only SDR 35 solid, smooth bore PVC pipe. It is the same thickness as Schedule 40 pipe but is not used for pressure. Heck, you can almost drive over it! We do NOT use the black, flexible ADS rolls of pipe as it will crush very easy even when backfilling the trench!
