A Guide to Fertilizing a Grass Lawn
Covering Surface Area: Broadcast or rotary spreaders are the most effective ways to evenly administer and distribute fertilizer over a large surface area. That said, always ensure the hopper is closed before the fertilizer is loaded. Start by spreading fertilizer on the exterior edges of an area, working evenly into the center.
Use a Pre-Calibrated or Battery Powered Spreader: For smaller, sloped, or areas with limited access, flip the switch on the more maneuverable pre-calibrated or battery-powered spreader models.
Fertilize and Water: As an essential preparatory step, thoroughly water your lawn a day or two before applying fertilizer. After the grass dries, apply the fertilizer and lightly water the surface again. The second splash of water wipes the blades of grass clean and helps the nutrients absorb into the soil. Avoid applying fertilizer in harsh conditions before a rainstorm or during extremely dry spells.
Grass Cycling: Grass cycling uses the cut shreds of dry grass to re-nourish the lawn with nitrogen and promotes growth and plant health. Use a mulching blade or specific mower that cuts the grass into smaller decomposable pieces, for the best results.
Soil Aeration: If you plan to aerate your lawn, assure you follow the process by applying fertilizer. The holes created during the aeration process provide great access for the fertilizer, air, and water to enter a deeper, near the plant’s root.
Plan For Ideal Conditions: Finding the best time to fertilize depends on the type of grass. As a general rule of thumb, try to fertilize during peak growing seasons. Here in North Texas, this means late spring to early summer for warm-season grasses and autumn for cold-season grasses. Just keep track of the weather, and don’t wait until it’s too late to get the most out of your fertilization.
Pick the Right Fertilizer: There are different types of fertilizers for different types of grasses, seasons, and the current status of your lawn. View our guide to fertilizer types here.
