Winter Outdoor Maintenance Checklist for Dallas TX

Outdoor Maintenance Dallas TXWe may tend to think of winter as a time to take a break from outdoor maintenance, but the mild winters in North Texas allow for some things you could and should do to beautify your lawn and garden and ensure it remains healthy for spring.

Here are five things to complete during the winter months in the Dallas, Texas area:

  1. Plant:  Winter is a great time to plant cold-enduring annuals such as pansies, snapdragons, and flowering cabbage or kale.  These should be planted either in November or early February. In late February you can also add calendulas, poppies, alyssum, wallflowers, petunias, stocks, or English daisies.  You will also want to plant perennial bulbs for tulips and hyacinths when soil temperatures stay consistent around 50 degrees. The best time of year for perennial planting is typically around late-December or early January but can vary slightly from year to year.
  2. Prune:  Remove dead and damaged tree limbs that might not survive a winter storm.  Winter is also a good time to prune trees and shrubs to tidy their growth. Bush-type roses should be pruned to half their height.  You will also want to prune back and clean up perennial gardens by late winter if you didn’t in the fall to make room for spring growth.
  3. Relocate:  Existing trees and shrubs are best to be relocated to another part of the yard or garden during the winter months and only after the first hard freeze.  It is imperative that trees and shrubs have gone dormant before they are relocated to avoid damage.
  4. Cover:  Prepare to cover cool-season flowers and any shrubs or plants that could be killed by cold spells.  You can buy lightweight landscape covers that you will want to cut ahead of time to fit your shrubs and garden beds.  Weigh them down with bricks or rocks to keep them in place. Also, make sure to disconnect and cover hoses during freezes.
  5. Lawn Care:  Taking care of your lawn is an important aspect of outdoor maintenance in the winter.  Snow is rare in Dallas and the surrounding areas, so lawns may still need to be watered in the winter if it’s been a couple of weeks without rain.  A good rule of thumb is to cut irrigation time in half once nighttime temperatures remain in the 40s or below. Turn off watering altogether during rainy periods.  During the winter months, you will also want to continue removing leaves and debris from the lawn that might block sunlight and kill the grass.  A mild, sunny day would be a great time to mow warm-season grass to manicure the lawn and remove any late-falling leaves and pine needles. A quick mow will also allow you to inspect the lawn for any winter weeds creeping up, which you will want to actively remove to keep the lawn looking good and healthy for spring.  If you desire a green lawn all year round, you can achieve this by overseeding, or planting cool-season grasses when your warm-season grass goes dormant for the winter months. A lawn care professional can help you know which grasses would be best for your lawn.

Winter is a great time to relax and enjoy the holidays with family and friends, but don’t forget to accomplish any needed items on this winter outdoor maintenance checklist to ensure a healthy landscape.  Want to relax even more during the winter months? erosion control

Erosion Control

CGreens uses a variety of ways to hold soil and keep it from washing away. Installing a retaining wall is an option that would be appropriate. There are many types of materials we use for the wall, from railroad ties, landscape timbers, concrete stones that look reasonably natural to many varieties and colors of native stone, which would be a beautiful addition to a landscape.

Of course, plant material such as ground cover or grass is excellent as an erosion control mechanism if you have the correct amount of sun and water. You may have a temporary need during construction that we can help with by utilizing special cloths explicitly designed for erosion control.

Re-grading your landscape to create a proper slope for runoff water and installing foundation protections such as wall sealant.

Adding a root barrier is also an option to help keep trees and large plant life from drawing moisture away from the soil which leads to erosion near the foundation of your home.

sump pump

Sump Pumps

An Installation of a Sump Pump or Pits would be done by CGreens in situations where there is not enough slope to discharge to a Surface Drain. Also, French Drains are typically deeper and will need a pump to discharge water up and out to an area away from the collection points.

The pumps that we install are commercial grade and can pump debris up to 1 ½” in diameter. We install check valves, unions, and alarms when necessary.

french drains

Surface & French Drains

Installation of surface drains, which are catch basin with a grate over the top of them at ground level, allows surface water to flow into them. When installing this system, CGreens makes sure to use a solid pipe that runs to a lower area to discharge, such as the street or storm drains.

CGreens installs French Drains to collect subsurface water, not surface water! French Drains are a trench in the ground, lined with a GeoTech cloth that allows water but not soil to penetrate. A solid PVC pipe that has holes is placed at 5 & 7 O’Clock positions, then the trench is filled with gravel, and the cloth is folded over at ground level.

Creating this hole creates a barrier to stop water and serve as protection and a sponge to draw water away from an area that needs to be kept dry. When we install a French Drain to prevent water from penetrating under a pier and beam foundation, the drain will be at least 6 inches below the perimeter beam.

Special note* CGreens uses only SDR 35 solid, smooth bore PVC pipe. It is the same thickness as Schedule 40 pipe but is not used for pressure. Heck, you can almost drive over it! We do NOT use the black, flexible ADS rolls of pipe as it will crush very easy even when backfilling the trench!

CGreens uses grates to catch water, and our filter systems can minimize the quantity of debris entering the system. For some grating projects, A foundation engineer may be the unbiased professional that you need. We have worked with many engineers since 1980 and can be your guide for a strong voice & properly graded yard and foundation.
